I have sponsored or co-sponsored numerous pieces of legislation to empower parents, because I am one. I've worked to increase choice in education, ensure parents can make medical decisions for their children, prevent Ai from being used by bullies to create fake explicit content of their peers, and protected girls sports from being used as a pawn in ongoing attempts to fight a culture war.
Thanks to responsible and conservative fiscal policies over the last decade, Georgia was better prepared financially than other states when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Our nearly $3 billion Rainy Day Fund helped blunt much of the adverse impact the economic shutdown had on our state. While we had to make some difficult temporary budget cuts in the beginning of the pandemic, we are now in the position of our Rainy Day Fund balance exceeding the statutory limit. The Georgia economy has remained resilient and we will conservatively invest that money into the highest areas of need (e.g., mental health services).
Recently, I helped pass legislation to ban surprise medical billing, cut prescription drug prices, and lower our maternal and infant mortality rates in Georgia.
I am also working on innovative healthcare policies that would expand access to care for Georgia’s most vulnerable populations and provide no-cost healthcare to Georgians at or below 200% of the federal poverty line. This bill would have allowed Georgia hospitals to conduct a pilot program to test the feasibility of this legislation at no cost to taxpayers. Unfortunately, over 95% of Democrats and even a few Republicans opposed the bill at the behest of special interest groups. I plan to reintroduce this legislation and will continue looking for new ways to improve our healthcare system.
Our police officers and first responders put their lives on the line to protect us each and every day. Unfortunately, our police departments are under attack by radical extremists who want to defund the police. I know that is not the answer to our problems. That’s why I helped pass legislation that keeps our law enforcement departments fully funded and increases funding for police training. All this while passing common sense criminal justice reform. I will continue to prioritize public safety while fighting to improve our criminal justice system.
